Still Trying to Customize Hat Sizes
Yes, I'm still trying to fit the hat size. Over the past few months I have received a lot of comments and questions about hat sizes. Since we all knit with hooks of different tension / size, it is impossible to specify the exact number of buttonholes. The graphics are good, but they don't tell us when to stop raising. This has always been my problem with gifts. If I do something for Ireland, I'll put it in their head and see how it fits and then adapt from there. But when it comes to gifts, it's hard to guess.
I decided to use all the Irish hats I made for him from birth, for my experiments. I compared the hat to the photo he was in. I looked at the date to determine how old she was when she wore it. This is how I measure the size.
This is a general diagram, but still very useful ... Better than nothing. The dimensions shown in the graph represent the size of the circle that should be obtained when enlarged. When you reach the desired size, stop multiplying and work evenly.
The diameter of the age circle
newborn 4 inches
3-6 months 5.5 inches
9-12 months 6-6.5 inches
24 months 6.5-6.75 inch
Small and small 7 inches
Adult female 7.25-7.5 inches
For example, if you're making a hat for a 12-month-old baby ... increase it until you get a circle 6-6.5 inches in diameter, then keep knitting each row evenly, with no accessories.
The hat pictured above is designed for a baby of about one year. So, as you can see, measure the circumference at exactly 6 inches.
The entire length will also vary with age
Long lasting
newborn 5 inches
3-6 months 6-6.5 inches
9-12 months 7 inches
24 months 7-7.5 inches
Small and small 7.5-8 inches
Adult female 8.5-9 inches
10 inch large adult
The blue hat above is for a 12 month old baby, so I had to knit a few more inches.
This green hat is for teen or adult women, so I will stop at about 9 inches.
Edit: If you make a hood, it will slightly reduce the length.
Of course, these measurements are not suitable for all children and adults. I made a large head hat for an adult woman over 10 inches in size. This is a general measure designed to offer a little help rather than trying to blindly make hats with no ideas.
I hope this helps.
Have a good week!
